May News Letter- First Grade
It seems hard to believe that this will be our last opportunity to share first grade news with you, but summer is on the horizon. Your children have been a real joy to work with. Fairbanks second grade teachers will be proud to work with the future class of 2021. WOW!
Students are completing Theme 9 in reading. The focus skills are word endings: “es” and “ies” and vowel pairs: “oi”, “oy”, “aw”, “au”.
For comprehension, students are becoming experts at noting details, and writing story summaries.
In grammar we are learning to use “is, are, was, and were”.
In writing students are learning to write a friendly letter, and must continue to focus on using complete sentences for all of their writing assignments.
AS we have repeated over and over, practice reading every day and don’t quit just because it is summer. Our final fluency first grade goal is 53 correct words in one minute. The second grade first trimester goal is 60 cwm. In order for your child to meet the first grade goal continue to practice the I Love Reading Books and memorize the High Frequency words. To meet the second grade goal your child should practice reading for about 20 minutes a day, all summer long.
In math, students need to continue counting money. We are estimating length of objects and will be teaching addition and subtraction of two digit numbers. Continue to practice counting by 5’s, 10’s, 2’s and then try 4’s or 6’s. Continue to count change and practice memorizing basic addition and subtraction facts using flash cards.
Other summer activities you might enjoy include visiting the library (on Grand Avenue) to check out books or attend free programs they sponsor. You can look for free activities at the Parks and Recreation Department sponsored by the Robertson Center. Visit the zoo, the museums, and places of interest like the deep water channel, the mountains, San Francisco, or walk along the bike trail and study nature. Most of all, have fun, and be safe until we see you again!
(Keep your ears and eyes posted – there may be a summer program at Fairbanks.)
